One of my roles at my job right now is being an internal photographer. So, at that time I took a picture of an internal event, a retirement ceremony.

I know that employee. He is one of the employees who has worked for more than thirty years at the office. He’s a very loyal, senior, responsible, respectable, hard worker, he’s very good, but he’s replaceable.

The Human Resources Department as a company representative may say: “we will miss you, you do a lot for this company, no one can be with you.” As a person anyone will miss him, but how about as a worker? He’s replaceable, maybe there are a hundred thousand people who can replace him as a worker.

Except for Vladimir Putin, or Kim Jong Un, even the President is replaceable. How many presidents have changed in your country in the last 2 decades, two, or three? If the president can be replaced easily, how about regular staff, or mediocre workers at a random company?

You wanna hear the worst? Contract worker! Contract workers need to renew their contract every period–every company has different regulations, depending on where the company is located.

I wanna make it easy let me give you an illustration.

Let’s say there is a 25-year-old fresh graduate, and he signs a contract at a random company for 5 years. After 5 years, the company decided not to use him anymore. So he needs to find a new place to work, look simple right? But the problem is he is 30 years old now.

Having no job at 30 is very hard, too old to be a fresh worker, but too young to be a senior. It will be challenging for him to find a new office.

Life is competition, so don’t let someone steal your job. The only thing you can do to protect your job is skilful in many fields. Most of the company nowadays push their employees to be good at many things, except specialist doctors.

It will be an advantage if you are really good at many things. Maybe you will lose your job, you lose your roles at the office, but you can find a new job, a new role, because you are so talented at so many things.

Being a nice person, is also can help you. Maybe you are not smart enough at that office, your performance is also not outstanding, but people really like a nice person. You will get a lot of help at the office if you are a nice person.

Here, I’m not to make you afraid or worry. I just tell the truth, and the truth is we are replaceable. If you know you are replaceable so you can prepare, upgrade your skill, being a nice person at the office, so if something bad still happens, at least you know the way out. The wise stoic person said, “prepare for the worst but hope for the best.”
